Under the watchful eye of the millennium wheel, lies a new secret playground. Southbank Centre’s ‘London Wonderground’ is a small but ambitious festival of cabaret, circus and sideshow.
As the sun sets it’s visually a stunner, with low hanging light bulbs cobwebbed above and large multi-coloured lanterns glowing from beneath twinkling trees. Circus themed shows and cabaret performers make frequent appearances and the mix-match of furniture and deckchairs creates a street-party feel. The highlight for me was the fairground themed pop-up bar tucked discreetly round the corner, (look for signs pointing you to the Cocktail Bar) where you can sit in vintage style waltzer booths or dodgem cars (luckily they’re stationary- it’s a bar after all!).
Whether you’re there to see a show or not, this is a real treat… They’ve applied such attention to detail with their design, you instantly leave London’s concrete jungle and escape into a wondrous spectacular. Catch it before the summer ends.
